Robert Louis Stevenson visited the lighthouse in 1879, when Robert Luce was keeper. Stevenson himself was trained as a lighthouse engineer back in Scotland and came from a long line of lighthouse engineers, including his father, grandfather, father's two brothers, his two nephews, and one great-nephew.

The Point Pinos Lighthouse in Pacific Grove, California, is maintained by an all-volunteer staff of restoration experts, docents, and historians. As with all active lighthouses and aids to navigation, the actual electric light itself is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.
